Strategic Club Marketing – A Few Experiences from the Ghana Premier League

Listen to articleThis article will draw largely from my personal experiences as the lead marketing guy when my former company was the headline sponsor of the local league and as such it might be a bit blunt. Over the years, a lot has been said about the standard of the local league with the majority of the blame laid at the doorsteps of the GFA. Nevertheless, I believe that a chunk of the blame ought to be laid at the doorsteps of the Clubs! From my experiences, I observed up close how clubs had no regard for strategic marketing, brands/image management, community engagement and strategic stakeholder management. There were a few exceptions and that’s why I have massive respect for Kudjoe Fianoo who as CEO of AshGold practically took personal responsibility to ensure the sponsor’s brand was well represented at Len Clay. In order not to make this a technical marketing article, I’ll discuss the issues under the following headings: Brands Management Negative Noise Digital Marketing Commu..

Talent Hunt: 15-Year-Old Player Manyina Prosper Tipped For Global Stardom

Listen to articleThe evolutionary mood around football has exposed many youngsters to the game thanks to the prevalence of European games on the local television stations. The continuous exposure, coupled with daily training and little guidance, has turned many lovers of the game into active footballers. The latest discovery on the Ghanaian terrain must be little Manyina Prosper with a rare class on the ball at just 15 years. Yes, fifteen years with the brains of a 30-year-old footballer. Spotted at the just ended Hon. Mathew Nyindam (Member of Parliament) for Kpandai Annual Gala in partnership with Ankasie, Prosper sent the hugely patronized soccer festival agog with ambidexterity, flair, charisma, and pace. His total control of the game and commanding nature on the pitch belies his age as a 15-year chap. Blessed with a lower center of gravity, little Prosper only needs one thing to succeed on the rectangular pitch, exposure. Already on the transfer list of multiple Ghanaian clubs an..

FLASHBACK: Ghana’s Penalty Woes; Jinx Or Science?

If there is a spirit that has perpetually haunted Ghana football and bittered the feeling of this football-crazy nation for years, it’s certainly a spirit that lies from just twelve yards. The penalty shoot-out curse. “How difficult is it to score from a penalty”? A fan in visible pain quizzed at the Sweet Touch Pub in Sunyani, where I watched the final of the 2015 African Cup of Nations between Ghana and Ivory Coast. Afriyie Acquah, Razak Braimah and Frank Acheampong had all missed their spot-kicks to hand the title to Ivory Coast despite the Elephants missing the first two. The irritated Ghanaian fan may be right to question. How can standing to shoot a ball from just some few metres away from a post of size 24 feet by 8 feet, that creates an opening that covers 192 square-feet be that a daunting task? That goal post, according to a Sports Science, is larger than a cargo container, which measures 20 feet, by slightly less than 8 feet. You may argue about the presence of a goalkeeper ..

Open Letter To GFA Boss Kurt Okraku

Dear Kurt, I commend you for your bold decision to defy all odds to contest the tough Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential election and win the mandate to manage the nation's most treasured sport for the next four years. What a privilege to succeed the man who rose to become the Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a FIFA Executive Council member. I pray you rise to that height as well one day since I believe you have the qualities to repeat that history and even surpass it. Let me quickly state that much as the plaudits have started pouring in to greet your victory, so a huge responsibility lies in wait for you to meet the expectations of the football family in particular, and Ghanaians in general. As you know already, the football constituency in the country is huge, hence the need to work hard to satisfy all and sundry and make a name for yourself. One thing you should bear in mind is that whether you stay in office for four years or eight ..

Kurt Okraku’s Election: Case Of Unmistaken Identity

Football unites; football people divide. Football creates wealth; football people loot wealth. Football has since time immemorial served society in countless beneficial ways. It has been the only unifying factor beside Christianity and its variants. It brings people together from all walks of life without discrimination, stereotype or marginalization. Football resonates with the rich and poor, all races and tribes, ethnic groups and genders. Football is a religion that has never disappointed its loyalists and worshippers. From the foregoing, football bodes well for humanity. As such, it is expected that people who opt to play the intermediary role between football and its lovers identify with the mission of football and act along. It is, therefore, counterproductive for football people to join the fray with the parochial intent and calculated steps of self-aggrandizement. When the quest for money making out-positions the unifying role of football, the outcome is always deleterious. On ..

Black Stars Miss Three Friendly Matches

Ghana's lackadaisical attitude has led to the nation a team Black stars miss three international friendlies without playing a single game during the FIFA international break which starts from September 2019. Instead, the Normalization Committee are bussy on so called presidential elections. Football is not active to produce players for national assignment .what a shame. Since the Normalization Committee took over the helms of Ghana Football, they could not organize a full Ghanaian fourteen league timetable. The Black Stars have not played any warm-up games during a FIFA date for international friendlies since the interim body assumed office. In fact, the only friendlies the national team has played under the watch of the NC is against Namibia and South Africa in preparation for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana’s inactivity during the international break is likely to cost the Black Stars on the world ranking, as well as the incoming AFCON qualifier between Ghana and Bafan..
